Primary Environmental Conference

Humber EBP in conjunction with Plan-it Eco (Protecting Environmental and Cultural Awareness and Understanding) and supported by BP Saltend Schools Link held an Environmental Conference for Year 6 pupils entitled  ‘Action Speaks Louder’ on Thursday 5th July  2007 at the Country Park Inn, Hessle.

The conference was designed to support the school curriculum and promote environmental awareness and responsibility.

All activities, led by Phil Williams of Plan-it Eco, an environmentalist and former director and actor in theatre, television and film, were
designed to be interactive, exciting and thought provoking, and give young people the opportunity to explore local and global issues.

At the conference, pupils from Humber Schools considered issues such as sustainability and biodiversity, conservation and commercialism, and the demand for, and use of, natural resources.

They were given a real life situation and asked to represent organisations that have to make decisions that could have a major impact on the environment.  The role-playing activity, when the students represented the Worldwide Fund for Nature, indigenous people, rural people, the Governor and his/her representatives, the World Development Bank and a multinational oil company, allowed the students to gain experience of debate and decision-making processes in the distinctive setting of a council chamber.

At the end of an extremely stimulating and challenging day, certificates were presented to the students.
